In 1991, Our founder, Tony Banks, recognised that there was a woeful absence of superior residential care provision in North East Scotland.
He identified a number of issues that spurred him on to start what was to become the Balhousie Care Group:

• The number of excellent residential care facilities available in the region was limited (and even then unlikely to meet the needs of a growing, ageing population)
• The standards in the majority of care homes at that time were well below normal expectations or tolerances.
• As baby boomers grow older, their expectations of how they will be looked after in later life will be more demanding.
• The sheer number of elderly people that require residential or specialist care was increasing exponentially year on year.
• There were still many negative myths and beliefs about the general standard of residential care. Things needed to change and improve.

Tony decided this was an excellent opportunity to enter the care home sector. He set out to provide an undisputed level of caring excellence by way of the facility itself, the staff the company recruits, the management ethos and guiding principles, and most importantly the level of genuine care provided by everyone in the organisation.

Lisden: the first Balhousie Care Home

The first care home we opened, "Balhousie Lisden", is still one of the finest homes in Balhousie Care Group, nestled away in the peaceful countryside setting of Kirriemuir (birthplace of the legendary Peter Pan author J.M Barrie). Since the opening of Balhousie Lisden Care Home, the Group has grown (either through acquisition or by new build) by 21 homes, bringing the residential capacity of all 22 homes to 800 residents, capably and admirably cared for by 800+ staff.

The driving philosophy behind all Balhousie Care homes ensures that Tony's dream and ambitions are present in all Balhousie Care homes - and provides a constant reminder of the principals that drove Balhousie Care then - and continue to be part of our everyday life today. We call it "The Balhousie Way".
