Balhousie Care Group is the largest privately owned group of nursing homes in Scotland, and operates residential care homes primarily in the Eastern region of Scotland. For actual locations of all our care homes click here.
The group has grown exponentially over the past five years and now operates 20 homes providing residential accommodation for over 700 residents. There is approximately a 50/50 mix between self funded and socially funded residents. Our medium term aim (over the next 24 months) is to have a resident mix of 80% traditional elderly residents and 20% with "special needs or learning difficulties". This would encompass residents suffering with some form of learning difficulty or dementia (this target group represents a growing problem in Scotland, as well as other parts of the UK, and could eventually take up a 25% share of our resident profile). Many of our homes feature specifically designed units to provide specialist care to this group.
Balhousie Care Group currently employs 725 staff, of which c.85% are indigenous to Scotland.
The group’s property portfolio is a healthy and attractive mix of refurbished (and very well maintained) "classical" properties and impressive state-of-the-art new build (green field or brown field developments). The latter new-build homes are often likened to light, modern and airy hotels rather than the stereotype image of British nursing homes.
Funding for the firm currently is a balance of traditional debt and private equity. Tony Banks is the sole shareholder in the company.
The founder of the firm, Tony Banks, has recently had his personal contribution to the residential care for the aged sector acknowledged through a number of awards, including Entrepreneur of the Year 2008. The firm's growth has also been recognised through recent citations including being finalist in the 2009 Virgin Fast Track 100 (where Balhousie was voted "Fastest growing business in Scotland").
The group is about to embark on its next stage of growth, which could easily see the number of registered beds double to 1500 places by the end of 2011.
