Families donate garden benches to care home in memory of former residents

Relatives of two former residents of a Perthshire care home have donated two garden benches in memory of their loved ones, and as a thank you to staff for the special care they received.

The families of Mrs Christina Burrell and Mrs Margaret Leadbetter both attended a ceremony at Balhousie Luncarty Care Home, in the village of Luncarty, to hand over the benches, which will be used and enjoyed by residents on fine days.

The local minister, Rev Derek Lawson, blessed the two benches and guests were treated to a buffet lunch on Sunday (October 3).

Mrs Burrell lived at Balhousie Luncarty Care Home, which is owned by the Balhousie Care Group, from June 2008 until she died in July this year, at the age of 89.

Her husband John, son Ian and daughter-in-law Heather attended the ceremony.

Mrs Leadbetter was a resident from March 2001 until March this year, when she passed away aged 82. Her bench was donated by her daughter Carol Stewart.

Tracy McEwan, manager of Balhousie Luncarty Care Home, said: "We were delighted to receive the two garden benches, which were kindly donated to the care home by the families of Christina and Margaret as a thank you for the high standards of care they received while they lived with us."

"They can be assured that the benches will be much appreciated and well used by our residents who enjoy walking around our gardens when the weather is nice, and they will serve as a fitting tribute to these two wonderful ladies."

Balhousie Luncarty Care House was originally the family home of the Stevensons, who owned both Stanley and Luncarty Mills. The mills provided work for the local people both in Stanley and Luncarty and the home remains very much part of the local community.

The house was developed as a residential home in the 1980s, and still maintains many of the original features such as original fireplaces, wood panelling in the dining room and main staircase.

Balhousie Luncarty is registered for 32 residents, of which up to eight are cared for within the home's specialist dementia unit.
